It would be nice if media files had a sort-by-type selection.

And, to push the edge, if the exiting file types could be selected (i.e., PDF, JPG, etc.).

Well, sort of. I added what I could for now. Perhaps additional functionality will be developed in the future. Let me know how it works for you!
