Category slug adding -2

I have just added 2 new categories but i notice the slug has -2 added on the end of it. It says that there is another category with the same slug name but when i look, there isn’t. I understand sometimes if you have created a category in the past and deleted it, it will remember it. Perhaps this is what is happening but I can’t find the trash for categories. Any help would be appreciated
