By demo areas do you mean like a development version of the clients site? If so maybe look into http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network and have a separate site/users for your clients to access.

I never thought about using Multisite. Duh!
The plugin seems like a better fit for me at this point of time as I can migrate the website once it has been developed.
No problem! I use multisite and love it. It allows me to test new features/plugins/themes very easily. Glad that the plugin will do the trick for you.

Another question Adam if you have had experience in this.
Can I do a multisite install and then use the password protect plugin to protect each of the development version of the client site? That should work – logically – i,e if my brain is working logically at 1 AM in the morning on a Friday!

That makes sense to me. Each site would have the plugin running separately so you could have as many as you wanted.
