Featured Thumbnail

I’ve been using a custom field for a thumbnail on my site and not had any problems but i want to set the featured thumbnail automatically.

Is there a simple way to hook wordpress’s _thumbnail_id and point to to my own custom field ‘thumbnail_url’?

This would allow me to keep my current themes and allow plugins that use the new featured thumbnail field to use my current thumbnails.
