PhpMyAdmin and database set up

    I am sure I know the answer but want to be sure. I have a client I just got yesterday and we want to set them up for WordPress the issue is that they are with a company that was hosting them and maintaining their site. They are still using them for hosting but want me to take care of the site. The company gave them the FTP access info, I had them ask for Cpanel access and the company told them all they need is FTP access. I know I can upload WordPress files with FTP but can I create the needed database with FTP I am guessing the answer is no but like I said I want to make sure.

    No. All you can do is move files around. You cannot mess with the database at all over FTP. You need cPanel access or shell (ssh) access to mess with the database. The host should know that. It is sort-of like a mechanic not knowing that a car needs gas. Who said you only need FTP access? Your client or the host?

    Technically, once the database is set up you can limp along without access to it, but if you have any kind of database related problem you are screwed. I wouldn’t want to maintain a live site without database access. That is asking for trouble… and it would be your fault whether it really is your fault or not 🙂

    We did not tell them why we wanted Cpanel access just that we did. Right now their site is all html static pages. So I am guessing that is why they told them they only need ftp access. But it could also be that the host is sort of subleasing part of there server space to clients there for they don’t want them to have Cpanel access that is just my guess.

    I would investigate that host’s capabilities before jumping into this.

    I think we are going to change him to another host. One that I know will give us access to the Cpanel.

    It might be that your client isn’t on a web hosting plan with MySQL provided. Perhaps all you have to do is to upgrade the plan.
