Author Profile

Am just wondering, is there any ways that i can add fields into an author profile instead of those provided?

yes, i do understand in order to do so, i will need to alter the tables in mysql, however, i am just wondering how to go about it via plugin or anything else instead of hacking into the source code? also, i would like to add “author’s picture” into the profile…
