I have the need to display the same featured image but a different size on a event page due. When I use the width/height attributes, it distorts the image and looks pretty bad as you can imagine. Is there a quick way to add another image, already cropped to size, and add use an addition placeholder to display it? As far as my knowledge goes, custom attributes only handle text, correct?

yes, you can use plugins like http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/types/ then it has a settings that you can add custom fields e.g. http://i48.tinypic.com/az9wsy.png ; this custom fields will be available when you add a new event and you can use it in EM Settings > Formats/Layouts > Events Format using #_ATT{wpcf-event_image} or <img src="#_ATT{wpcf-event_image}" />

also, you might need to enable event attribute or custom fields at settings > general > general options
