That seems to make it way more complicated than it should be. What do I need to find out from my host before I attept to do this?

In most cases, nothing. Just create an .htaccess file, CHMOD it to 777, and then come up with a permalink structure that you like in the options area.

CHMODing it to 666 should suffice. You don’t need to give the .htaccess file any execute permissions.
