Just updated plugins: Now getting error: The requested URL /index.php …

    I did an auto update of a set of plugins this evening (all plugins I’ve used for a while and successfully updated in the past).

    After updates, I get the following error on all posts and pages (main page works and looks as it should):

    Not Found
    The requested URL /index.php was not found on this server.
    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    I have looked around the support forum and have tried changing my permalinks. I have also attempted the steps suggested in this post including the steps in this link that was provided. All to no avail.

    My site is hosted by DreamHost and I have full FTP access. Site address is http://justfrances.com.

    My Web ability is ‘self-taught muddle-through’ but I can follow step-by-steps pretty well.

    Am happy to pay for a fix if needed.

    Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    Thank you! I have tried (and failed) with the first two options. Would you mind explaining your last option a bit?

    In my mind, it would work to:
    1) Download WordPress into a file on my desktop
    2) Copy/paste or drag all files except the wp-content folder into my FTP application to replace existing files

    Is that how I would do it, or did you have something else in mind?

    Try using FTP or use whatever file management application your host provides to upload the new copies from your computer to the new server directly.

    That’s what I’ve been doing and each time I refresh, it’s gone again.

    It’s gone? Have you checked the time stamps on any of the (hopefully) newly uploaded files? Are you sure that your FTP client is configured correctly?

    Yep. It’s gone. (Weird; spooky!) It’s just the index.php from the root–everything else is there and, in fact, I’ve uploaded a couple of test images and they stay whilst the index page vanishes. Just tried again; same thing.

    Can you clarify exactly what is is disappearing and from where? Are files disappearing from folders when you view them via FTP? Or do you mean that pages on the front end of the site are “disappearing”?

    The file (index.php) was actually disappearing with each refresh of the FTP site.

    I removed one of the plugins that I had updated just before this happened and that seems to have fixed the problem.

    –Re-installed the plugin to be sure, and it was the problem.
    –Have sent a message to plugin creator to alert them to the error.

    Site working fine now.

    Now that is very weird. Have you checked to see if this is still happening? If it is, it could be the first sign of a failing server. 🙁

    When the suspect plugin is installed, it happens. After removing the plugin (deleting all files) it stays just fine.

    I installed the plugin to my test site to see what happened and it was the same thing. So it is certainly something in the plugin’s files.

    Everything is working fine now. No errors.

    (Sadly, I loved that plugin but there must be a bug in their latest version.)

    What was the plugin? I’ve not come across this kind of behaviour before.

    Interesting. I think I’ll pass this on for further investigation. It could be just a fluke but I’d like to be sure since the plugin is hosted here.

    Well, as I said, prior to installing the latest update last night, my site worked fine as did the plugin. I really liked the plugin and would love to re-install when/if they fix it.

    Also, as I said, I did test it on another WordPress site (v 3.4.1) and got the same missing index.php issue (and error messages) when it was installed (and it went away when I un-installed).

    Can I just clarify something? Was the vanishing index.php file in the theme’s folder? Or was it a core WordPress file?
