Is there a way to preview a page or holding a page in a draft format before actually commiting it?

No draft or private status is available for Pages but consider using a password at a minimum.

Try JÃ„Ã… Preview Plugin – Plugin for â€œrealâ€? preview of your posts. http://fredfred.net/skriker/ For me it works excellent.
