Category Use and Clarification

    Theme – Magazine Basic:
    I have sought clarification on these in the forum and codex but have fallen short!

    What is the difference between a ‘Post’ and a ‘Page’?

    I have seen multiple uses of categories’ which probably contributes to my confusion. There is, from the Dashboard – “Post > Categories” and “Connection > Categories”. There are also Categories associated with Menus – “Appearance > Menus > Categories” .

    I have attempted to set up categories on the sidebar from the Widget plugins and apparently there is the option to add categories there, which seems to be independent of the categories under Menus. However, the widget shows up but the drop-down box is empty.

    Secondly, when the drop-down listing appears how are the groups of Pages or Posts populated in the Categories ?

    Here is some basic information about Posts vs Pages. One thing to note is that Categories can be assigned to Pages by using a plugin.

    There is, from the Dashboard – “Post > Categories” and “Connection > Categories”.

    Here is basic information about Categories.

    also Categories associated with Menus – “Appearance > Menus > Categories”

    In the Menus, you can add a Category name to the menu and it will serve as a way to view all Posts that have been assigned that category.

    If you are talking about the ‘Categories’ widget, this will happen if you do not have any Categories created and Posts assigned to them.

    The Categories widget just shows a list of Category names as links to view Posts that have been assigned to that Category, just as in the Menus.

    Searched the plugin files but could not find one – Is there one you can recommend and where I can locate it?

    I have used Map Categories To Pages.
