Category base name same as page.

I haven’t been able to find a workaround for this, so I’m open to good suggestions…

I use a static front page with blog content on an internal page ‘clips’ (without quotes).

I want to remove the ‘category’ element from category archives and have them at site-url/clips/category-name rather than the default of site-url/category/category-name.

I’d hoped to do this by setting a category base of ‘clips’ (without quotes).

But, because ‘clips’ is also a page name, that doesn’t work.

As an interim I’ve set a category base of ‘clips/c’ and so categories are viewable at site-url/clips/c/category-name – which isn’t ideal, but is ok (and might actually be better in that it removes any confusion with posts).
