• Hello,

I’ve bought the domain mariajoseponte.com from wordpress and want to set up the New Horizon theme on it. I have both the theme and the latest version of wordpress downloaded.

WordPress has no .exe file. Installation guides talk about databases, MySQL, FTPs, web servers, shells. I have no idea what this stuff is.

What I’d like to do, is get the above domain live, with the theme installed and then I can play. Do I need these two downloads? Can I just sort it out via browser?

I’d reeeeally appreciated help with this.

  • There are no exe files with this. Here is the instructions to follow

Now if you have cPanel then you might have Fantasico which will just install WP for you. Other hosting accounts have this feature too. So what I would do is google “your hosting company install wordpres” and you will most likely find an easier way if you are using a decent hosting company.

Who is my hosting company though? I bought my domain from WP as stated in the OP. What is cPanel?

    Someone please help.

Well it looks like WP is installed and running on that domain and a theme is installed that isnt the default.

Is this not right when you go to http://mariajoseponte.com/ ?

I think that is the default, I’ve not changed it. One of the few things that is confusing me is that, what is this download if it’s already working? Do I need to do something else?

If not, then I guess I just need to know how to get the theme in and then I’m good to go?

    Ahh your using wordpress.com

This support forums is for the self hosted ones. You should be posting over here

So they’re two completely different WordPress services and I don’t need any of that fancy developers stuff and I can actually do it all in the WordPress browser CMS?

    Yes.

    Thank you!

Just for future reference, what is the reason people would want to use the standalone WordPress package when the browser-based one is so much easier?

Okay, I found out this info on WordPress’ support site so I now get the difference.

One last question for this thread then is – does anyone know of a *very* comprehensive guide to set up a WordPress site for someone without coding or web development/hosting experience? I’d like to do it at some point, but would not know where to start!

what is the reason people would want to use the standalone WordPress package when the browser-based one is so much easier?

Erm…WordPress is always browser based and always needs a web server. Perhaps you’re thinking of wordpress.com sites? If so, see http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
