Plugins Don't Automatically Update

Hello. I’m sorry if this is a stupid question.
My site was hacked several weeks ago. I had to change servers and reinstall wordpress and all the plugins.

Recently my plugins all disappeared. I had older versions saved on my computer so manually re-uploaded them via FTP.

My problem is, I can’t just automatically update the plugins from wordpress. It says that it is starting the update but then I just get the spinning wheel and nothing happens.

Can someone please tell me how I can fix this? Also, I want to update to the latest version of wordpress but am afraid the wjole thing will freeze like it does for the plugins. Are they two different things?
