• I have a wordpress.com blogsite. I also have a site hosted through bluehost.com. I want to export the content from the wordpress.com site and import it onto my bluehost-hosted site.

The first day that I tried it I was clicking around a whole bunch and accidentally made it happen. But when I refreshed to see the page, it was a big jarbled mess, so I sacked the whole thing and forgot about it for a few weeks. Now, I need it to happen, but I forget how I did it.

In trying again, I went to the wordpress.com site and hit export. From that, I had a file called “filename.xml”. Then, I go to the WordPress portal in the bluehost control panel and select import. It loads for a long time (about 15 minutes) and then there’s nothing changed on my actual site.

I’ve checked to see that the browser is just loading a cached version of the site… it’s not… and that’s about all I can think of in terms of troubleshooting because I’m not an expert.

    Thanks for your help.

I did. There isn’t much there that I didn’t state that I already tried.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘WordPress portal in the bluehost control panel’.

You need to log into the backend of your WordPress installation, typically found at http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin. Once you are logged in, on the left hand side hover over Tools and then click on Import. Select the WordPress option and install the plugin if you haven’t already.

After the plugin is installed, hover over Tools again then select Import. Select WordPress and then use the next screen which should be asking for a file to import your WordPress.com content into your self hosted installation.

Heh, yeah, I only called it a WordPress portal because I’m not down with all the terminology and it was very late.

I have done everything that you said I should do. In fact, I’ve done it and redone it so many times that when I go to hit “Import” again, it shows a list of all the files that already exist there. I do wonder if something there is messing up, because every time, that list gets longer of stuff that’s already been imported. Again, though, I go to refresh my site and nothing is there.

Should it take a certain amount of time? or require any other confirmation of settings or such? I’m not sure why the first time I at least got some of the information to transfer and this time I get nothing.

blah, so I went with the import again just because I could, and it actually imported some of the stuff this time. Not all, and not as much as the last time when I was just fumbling around with it.

Should I not expect the export/import process to recreate an exact replica of the old page I had? There wasn’t anything customized on it at all, just content added.

    [ Don’t bump, that’s not permitted here. ]
