Custom pages

Hi, am trying to create a custom frontpage for my site using twentyten theme which has a custom one column page template.

The problem is, I used html tables {css div tag is a bit too difficult for me} to format my page to add custom columns given its width 100%, but the table doesn’t seem to occupy the 100% width of the page. {it does when I use a sidebar but I don’t want the sidebar}.

Another probem is, I want to add widgets on my page without the sidebar. Widgets like the login widget, latest posts, category lists etc.
Can someone guide me to achieve the result?
