How do I create a member log in area and make some pages only accessible to members?
I also want to create a database of members email addresses for sending out email notifications.

A Google search for ‘wordpress members only tutorial‘ should give you lots of leads.

You can check into plugins I use Email Users 2 to send emails to registered members and as for creating member pages you can use a custom template if you just want restrict pages to members only

or for more advanced system you can use s2members plugin will take effort to set it all up.
