Surround each post in a div. Then you can apply a background/border and a margin to the top and bottom to get that effect.
Also displaying the h2 as block, and doing the same thing will give you an affect like http://zed1.com/journalized/

dont mean to sound unappreciateive.. but my knowledge in php and css is limited. i think i know what im doing but then again im not. trying to get the basic principle of the idea looking at classic’s index.php. if it at all possible could you be more elaborate or point me in the direction of a tutorial or somethin that will get me on track.. thanks!@
Another option is to go to the theme-viewer:

Select the Journalized… download and look at the code how it was done.
