New Archive Layout

I’m using Comicpress to upload posts with attached images. How can I adapt my archives.php page so that it looks something more like this:

((Left side of the page))
[TITLE OF CATEGORY]
Total Entries:
[number of posts filed under the category]
Latest Entry:
[title of newest post filed under the category]
[date of the aforementioned post]

(([[Right side of the page))
[Thumbnail of the aforementioned post]

Here’s a drawn example of what I’m asking for.
