You can replace the graphics or change the design using a custom stylesheet. It is possible to add a pause button, but it would be a bit more complicated, here is an example.

has anything been with this? love this slider, much better than Orbit which i thought was the end of all awesomeness in sliders 😉 only thing is, they have this cool pause button that shows also how long the slide goes for. any idea about implementing that?
i could try to hack at the jquery, not so good yet, maybe you can point me in the right direction for a head start?

You don’t have to hack the jQuery, but it doesn’t include the pause button if the shelf, so it does require a bit of customization.
To actually add the button, use a custom slideshow template, and style the button using a custom stylesheet.
To add the functionality to get that pause button working, take a look at the source code of the pause example. You don’t have to hack jQuery Cycle to add that, you can use a custom slideshow script.
