Sub-directory install of multisite on Bluehost

    Hi all,

    I am admittedly new to this forum and to Multisite. I’m running into a few snags and after trying a bunch of different things, uninstalling and reinstalling, everything is starting to blur together. I’m hoping if I explain the context here, you all might be able to see through it and tell me what I’m doing wrong. 😉

    My ultimate goal is to create a multisite network of blogs that my students can use for their portfolios. I am trying to install multisite on a subdomain (blogs.isbreda.com) rather than the main site http://www.isbreda.com. I was told by WP after enabling the network that I had no choice but to do a subdomain install, which is not what I want. I want the student sites to follow the path blogs.isbreda.com/student1, but when I tried setting up a new site WP made it student1.blogs.isbreda.com.

    The site is hosted at Bluehost. After talking with their support chat, I was given a link to this article:

    The guy at Bluehost support said I needed to create a wildcard subdomain of *.isbreda.com. I did that and then proceeded to install WP on blogs.isbreda.com for the umpteenth time, but still faced this message: “Because your install is not new, the sites in your WordPress network must use sub-domains. The main site in a sub-directory install will need to use a modified permalink structure, potentially breaking existing links.”

    Was I supposed to do something with that *-domain? Redirect it to something? Should I NOT be installing wordpress in blogs.isbreda.com even though I want it to be there?

    Oh, and not sure if this information helps, but I installed WP using the one-click install on Bluehost’s cPanel and then edited the wp-config and htaccess files there.

    Eventually after trying some of the tricks detailed in the two articles, I broke the site and couldn’t log in to blogs.isbreda.com/wp-admin. So I uninstalled…again…and decided to reach out to the support forums.

    If you have blogs.isbreda.com be your main multisite site then your subdomains on it will all be something like sub.blogs.isbreda.com.

    If you want your subdomains to all be in a format like sub.isbreda.com, then your main multisite install would be best on isbreda.com

    You also cannot setup a subfolder multisite install from a subfolder. It would have to be on the domain itself.

    If you’re going for a wildcard subdomain approach, make sure that the wildcard subdomain you create is assigned to the root folder for your multisite install and *not* to a “wildcard” directory. If it is for blogs.isbreda.com then it will be something like public_html/blogs … If it is just for isbreda.com, then it would be something like public_html (Assuming that your domain is assigned directly to the public_html directory). If you need to, delete and recreate your wildcard * subdomain

    If your install on blogs.isbreda.com is fairly new, just delete it and install a new one, then setup multisite on it. If the content on there is important, then you might be able to work around that with something like the following: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/to-create-a-new-network-you-will-need-to-empty-or-remove-the-network-database-t?replies=13
