• I would like to create a diary type posting page where entries are added sporatically, but would show up ordered chronologically by original date of the actual diary entry vs. post creation date.

    My website is called If You Give A Mom A Soldier
    and I have tons of blog material from letters/emails etc. my son & I have exchanged over the years. My inspiration for adding a post does not come in a chronological fashion, however, but I would like them to show up as such on the website.

    The only thing I can think of is to just add the entries into a single blog post, sticking new entries within the post dated chronologically at the top of each new entry.

    Dilema is related to “latest posts“:
    How would I communicate there are new diary entries within that post so that the reader doesn’t have to scroll the entire post to figure out where the new entries are?

    Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have. 🙂

    I just want to add that I have done a ton of research trying to figure this out, & all I managed to do was confuse myself – lol ish.

    No – a single post should not be necessary and would quickly become completely unwieldy. where yo you want this chronological listing to be shown? On your main Posts page? Or within a specific category only?

    Hi Esmi,

    Forgot to mention I’m a total Nubie with WordPress & Blogging.
    And, this is a very emotional blog/subject matter, which makes it difficult to think clearly.

    That being said:

    No – a single post should not be necessary and would quickly become completely unwieldy.

    I figured as much – lol

    I’m not sure, which I realize is not helpful. As a reader, how would you envision such a thing?

    My first inclination is to have it show up on the sidebar in a fashion similiar to how the Archives are displayed, month by month. Here’s a visual I tried to create to help with this lame description.
    Image of current web page with possible idea for diary location.

    After thinking about this approach, however, it seems to me that the Archives month tabs, as well as the considered Diary month tabs will cause the diary to fall off the page after a bit.

    Is there possibly a widget, or a post “type” that I should consider?
    My brain is mush right now.

    Then we’ll do our best to help you.

    The sidebar display could be handled with a secondary Loop and a temporary filter on the_excerpt(). I assume you want individual posts listed, yes? Will all of these entries be in a single category? If so, would you also want that category’s posts display reversed?

    As I feared, I would not understand the help you might offer. Visual designer, yes, technical “how to make it do what I visualize”, yeah … not so much – lol.

    The questions you asked me, however, have been very helpful in that I realize now I’m not really sure how I want this to look. I was limiting myself to the parameters of my current layout/theme, but after pondering your questions, I have decided that I’m going to scout out some other blogs to see if anything appeals. I’m really interested in creating a Pinterest type design now, with photo links to posts, which will be another animal.

    Even doing this, however, will not necessarily resolve my original question. I’m going to go research the suggested “secondary Loop and a temporary filter on the_excerpt” to see what that means. Fortunately for me, my engineer husband’s fearless code reading/understanding ability should come in quite handy. 🙂

    Pondering your other questions:

    Do I want individual posts listed?
    I think so… it just seems weird to me to make a whole new post for each entry. That probably is the only way to get them to show up in any kind of order, though, so I’ll just go with it – lol

    Will all of these entries be in a single category?
    I typically put my posts into a main category, but also add them to either the laugh, cry, or be inspired by categories. Probably I would do the same in this instance.

    If so, would you also want that category’s posts display reversed?
    Excellent question!!! No answer. Part of my dilemma with this is that, if you were reading a physical diary, you would read it front to back, oldest to newest entries. But if I put it on the blog that way, wouldn’t the reader have to scroll through many pages/posts (or however it ends up being done) to get to the “newest” entries. (And then there’s the whole non-chronologically inspired posting). But, if I reverse displayed, that would be similiar to reading a diary backwards, which I think would be weird, too.

    I hope I haven’t confused you as much as i have mysekf – lol. Been chasing my tail on this for awhile now.

    I appreciate your input, & if you have any magical answers, or better yet, magical questions, I’m all ears.

    Hi Esmi,
    Just wanted to give you an update:
    I have been researching various widgets that seem to assist in meeting my goals.

    The one that will get me the Pinterest Look is:
    WP: Widget: (GPLWT) Get Post List With Thumbnails and an example page that uses that widget is here:
    Visual Recipes Gallery

    The next widget I’m going to try is:

    WP: Widget: W4 post list
    Plugin’s Features: Post list can be displayed with it’s category name or with out it. Also you can only show selected category list. After selecting a category, select the post you want to show manually. You can manage how the list will be displayed. Posts can be shown with –
    * post ID
    * post title
    * post content/excerpt
    * post image/thumbnail
    * post author
    * publishing date/time
    * last modified date/time
    * read more link

    So far today, my dear hubby has gotten WP: Widget: (GPLWT) Get Post List With Thumbnails up & running on my blog, & I have every faith that he will also be able to get the WP: Widget: W4 post list up & running as well.

    I want to thank you for your insight & valuable questions.
