Where are my sub categories?

Hi,
I’m running with the “retro-fitted theme” for several ecommerce type sites. It shows the categories on the front page, but I have things under subcategories as well, and I don’t see the subcategories shown. Did I miss something simple? I (wrongfully) assumed I would see subcategories indented below the parents.
