You nailed it as to what the feature does.
And yes, the auto-publish has to be enabled. This is because the auto-publish mechanism receives the ID of the resulting post to Facebook, and that ID is needed to check Facebook for the comments on that post.
In other words, if you’re manually publishing links and things, then there’s no way for the plugin to know that you did so and no way for it to ask Facebook to get the comments back. But with auto-publish, it’s making the post to FB, so it knows the ID of the post, and thus it can go get the comments for that post.

I see, that makes sense.
But don’t you receive the ID even if I manually publish a link via the plugin (i.e. instead of copy pasting the link in Facebook, I hit the Post on Facebook button that your plugin adds to pages)?
No, the manual button is entirely javascript based. It’s going from your browser directly to FB. Never hits the server.
Hey,
I spend all day searching solution and I can’t find anything useful…
My problem is with comments. Here is the site:
http://asadorrioja.com/
Well, I set all necessary options + “Automatically Publish to Facebook Fan Page”. I get:
User ID and Access Token found!
Application Access Token found!
Fan Page Access Token found!
Then I publish post – automatically it goes on my fun page. Then I try to comment using button “connect to facebook” – everything go right. Then I put some comment and I submit it. It appears on my web (with my facebook avatar) but at facebook fun page where is automatically published this post it doesn’t appear.
What’s more, it also doesn’t work in the other direction. When I try to comment automatically published post it appear on the fb but not at my web page. It’s look like I doesn’t cooperate…
Any solution? I will be grateful.
Comments aren’t shared like that between the two posts. That’s not a feature of the plugin.
But what “Integrate comments made on Facebook back into your own site” means? For example if someone put comment on my automatically published post in fb, the comment should be send back to my website?? But it’s not working…
That will work, but it has a delay built in for caching reasons. So it may take 12 hours or more for the comments to show up on your site.
Even then, they won’t show up like normal comments do. They will show up on the single-post-page for that post only.
