• I am doing a redesign for a large (200 page) website. Obviously, the new design needs to be totally complete before it’s activated (and, thus, public). Since this site is so extensive, I want to make sure and develop the theme in place. What is the best way to do this?

I know I can go to Appearance > Editor and select our new theme from the drop down to make some edits there. But we’re using Thesis and I’d like to use their interface, which (as far as I know) you can only access when the theme is active.

Also, what is the best way to check the new design while it’s in progress? Is the Theme preview the only option?

Advice would be much appreciated – thanks!

  • Don’t think you’ve got much choice. You’ve probably got to set up a local installation and work on it there.

I’d create a local WP installation and add a few representative pages that will suffice for development. Then I’d install the existing theme with any modifications.

Finally I’d do the new modifications locally, before at last uploading them to the live site. If you keep all your changes together in a child theme it should be pretty straightforward.
