• I submitted my first WP site to google on 29/1/12 and it has been indexed. However, in webmaster tools>HTML suggestions it says that there are missing title tags on the on the / page. The site is http://www.letsgoyoga.com and assuming that the home page is the problem, I have checked the source code and can see a title tag containing the keywords ‘Yoga in Twickenham’. I need to understand the impact of this message – could it be accounting for the site’s bad page rank and serp position(when searching for the keywords)- and how to fix it. Also I have noticed that when I google letsgoyoga the home page is not in the serp.

Any help would be gratefully received. Apologies if I am missing something basic.

The theme I’m using is Picolight.

Meta tags do not account for PageRank at all. Google and other search engines stopped using Meta tags compeletly since they were widely abused. Meta tags do help Google understans your site better though. Low results in SERPs are normal to start. It takes time and dedication to SEO, to really build a great ranking website. Title tags still are good since they are displayed on the site.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks Tim S. I agree with you about Meta tags but Title Tags are crucial for SEO aren’t they? Worried that the Google Webmaster Tools>HTML suggestion> ‘no title tag’ on the homepage could point to the cause of my seo problems and maybe why the homepage not in the serp at all for the domain name search.

No, while the title tag is technically a meta tag – Google treats them as such.

The biggest factors in SEO are content and backlinks. You want to make sure your have keyword targeted content that is unique. And you want to make sure you have other sites linking to yours (one way links are the best, meaning it’s best not to trade links if at all possible).

Title tags are great since they actually display content, but even if they did affect rankings it would be nominal at best.

The key to remember, is SEO and raking well in the SERPS takes time. If Google recommends you add title tage, by all means do so. But it will not impact your rankings.

Hi Tim S Many thanks for the information. I’ll stop worrying about the title tag issue and concentrate on keywords in content and backlinks ( and being patient).

Last thing and just to clarify “SEO and ranking well takes time”- is this due to the time that search engines take to get round to crawling sites or due to the time required to get content right?

There’s a lot of factors dealing with time in SEO. If a page is around for a few years, Google sees it as being far more legitimate than a page that is only days old. Also, it depends on the competition for the keywords. If the keywords you are wanting to rank for are highly competitive, then it will take longer to rank since you’ll have to do more.

Google crawls my site, almost everyday since I update it regularly. The trick is really having a long term SEO strategy as well as short term goals.

Remember, Google issues PageRank at their leisure and there is no rhyme or reason to it. IT could take 3 days or 6 months.
