    Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – re-running the upgrade via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Thanks for the quick response. First I followed your link about resetting the plugins folder by FTP and tried to reset the plugins but cannot logout or login to wp-admin from the control panel.
Re your first suggestion, I have not yet downloaded Twenty Eleven yet. Are you suggesting I need to or am I able to switch to any themes that I have previously downloaded- for example – Twenty ten.
    Thanks

None of the suggestions I posted above require you to login to your site. Does the wp-content/themes folder have a twentyten folder?

You sent this below via a link and I could not do point 3 -:
Or reset your plugins folder via FTP or the file manager provided in your host’s control panel.
    1. Via FTP or your host’s file manager, navigate to the wp-contents folder (directory)
    2. Via FTP or your host’s file manager, rename the folder “plugins” to “plugins.hold”
    3. Login to your WordPress administration menus (/wp-admin)
    4. Via FTP or your host’s file manager, rename “plugins.hold” back to “plugins”

I do have a twentyten folder. Shall I attempt with that? Sorry am not tech savvy at all
    Thanks

Add “-old” to the end of its folder name in wp-content/themes, yes.

Since your site is still not being displayed, upload fresh copies of the Twenty Eleven and Twenty Ten theme using FTP.

  • You’d need to contact your host to find out where the error logs are and if they are available. Typically, look for a file called error_log in the root folder. If it’s not there, you’l’l need to contact your host.
