Hi everyone, I have my site with bludomain. I like the site, but the blog, not so much. I need so major help. I am COMPLETELY. COMPLETELY TECH ILLITERATE. I downloaded cyberduck as instructed by blu and after 3 days finally got that to open. Now I am clueless of what to do. I have contacted blu again (poor guys) and they tell me they cannot help me transfer the blog, that I have to contact WP. If anyone feels like paying it forward and literally SPOONFEEDING. YES SPOONFEEDING me the instructions, I would be forever grateful. thanks so much susan

  • Hi susan,

Where is your blog currently hosted at now? You say you are transferring the blog. Is this a self hosted blog or a blog at wordpress.com? I think you’ll find many of the community members are willing to help you. We were all new at one time.

Can you provide us a link to the blog you wish to transfer?

I will try to answer. My blog is hosted at blu domain. it is a new site and not live yet, because I have been waiting to get a wordpress instead. when I went to wordpress, I followed the steps, I already had the site, the host, so I downloaded wp , and I downloaded cyperduck for the FTP and now I have no clue what to do.

So you’re not transferring a website, you need to install WordPress, right?

I guess. there are all these articles about SQL, have no clue what that is. I have downloaded it. And like I said I have succeeded with the cyber duck and now I am lost. Like I said, I am completely lost. thanks for your help.

SQL, is a database language. MySQL is required to run on the server since you will be stored all the site’s information in a database. You will need to log into your host’s control panel and create a database and user (with all privileges) that WordPress can use. After that, you’ll need to upload WordPress to your document root folder on your hosting accounts server.

I know it sounds daunting, so let’s take it one step at a time. Do you know how to create a database with your host?

no clue! And you have no idea how much i appreciate this

It looks like your web host uses cPanel. You’ll need to log into cPanel. Here’s a tutorial on how to use the Database wizard option in cPanel to create a database and user.

    http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/cpanel/how-do-i-create-a-mysql-database-in-my-control-panel-cpanel

Write down the database name, username, and password. Later during the installation you’ll have to use it.

so are you speaking of when I log into the admin on my blusite? because I really have not idea what you mean.

I looked at blu domains hosting site and saw they use cPanel. cPanel is like your control panel for your hosting account. It’s where you would create email accounts, upload files, create databases, etc.

If you’re not sure of how to do this, you may want to contact them as it could differ from host to host.

I think that is why I am so confused I was originally hosting my site on fatcow and when I switched to blu domain, they were suppose to switch everything over however, when I log in to capturingjoy.org/cpanel, as it says on your website it sends me to fat cow. ugh. I have told them this, but havent received a response

Your domain is still pointed at fatcow. It appears the new host has not transferred anything. You may want to contact them, to find out what’s going on, if they were supposed to transfer the site for you. Ideally though, to point the domain name to the new host, you would need to change the nameservers of the domain to your new hosts.

Tim you were so great at helping me a couple of weeks ago. I was in a horrific car wreck and am just getting back to the computer. I do have some of the answers and was hoping you may still help me. I am now able to get into the cpanel on bludomain there is a sql already set up Do I need to set up another, or just use the one there?
