Unable to change urls

I recently switched a website to wordpress but I have been struggling with the issue of moving the site to the root folder (initially I created in sub-folder so I could create before removing the old site). I did manage to get the home page to open to http://www.example.com but all other pages open as http://www.example.com/wordpress/..

I am very familiar with the wordpress document, http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress but I am STUCK.

The first issue is that I am unable to change the url address for wordpress or site–both read http://www.example.com/wordpress and when I make the appropriate change and click save i am immediately brought to the admin login page–after I log in–I am brought back to the general settings page and the original address remains…

Any suggestions??? ( I did not change the wp-config file)
