Permalink trailing slash problem

I’m having a problem with my permalink trailing slash…
I changed my Permalinks to

http://byfordwa.com/sample-post/

then I changed it to

http://byfordwa.com/sample-post

How come the trailing slash breaks my links? Why can’t I access my posts with either of these ways?

Is there a fix for this?
