Custom postype index page no working

Hi im new to WP, i was following the Lynda.com course about cuustom Post Types
i created 3 custom post types 1 named “recipes” whit archive = true, then the course tells me to create a archive-recipes.php a copy from index.php in the parent theme (twentytwelve) and set the permalinksto custom like this /%category%/%postname%/.
when i do that it returns 404 error i return the permalinks to deffoult and works ok and its fine for me but i cant find the index for that custom posttype i asume is /?recipes/ but that guives me the default posts and the template is the index from 2012 it dosent reconice the archive-recipes.php themplate can some one shed some light pls
