Image with pop-up bubble

Hello,
I’d like to have a clickable image on one of my blog pages such that when the user hovers over certain regions of the image (or clicks them; doesn’t matter) some kind of a bubble pops up with a text message relevant to that region where the mouse was. (something similar to the popups on a google map …not a whole new window popup; I already know how to do that)

Any suggestions on how to do this (I prefer to work on the Linux platform if possible but that’s flexible)? Is there a plugin method or a javascript method or a jquery method you’d recommend? Can you mention a site that uses whatever solution you’re recommending for this?
