divide page content between multiple pages : pagination

I want to be able to take a page’s content, say 3,500 characters worth of content, and divide it into sections of no greater than 1,000 characters. At the bottom of each section, I would like go forward and go back hyperlinks.

Anybody have any ideas? I’m “eh” in PHP, but am willing and able to learn.
