I am being told that WP.com will not allow affiliate marketing but .org sites will. Does that mean I need a .org extension on my blog-site? Thanks for an explanation.

.org is just where you download the wordpress software and receive volunteer support
you will need to get a domain name and a web host and install wordpress at the host

many hosts offer a one click install of wordpress

No – it means that you need to install and run your own copy of WordPress on your own hosting and domain.
