Set up a 301 redirect for the index.html page to redirect to your wordpress installation.
Thanks Tim,
Is there any way of getting rid of that index.html page altogether as it doesn’t make sense to have 2 home pages and isn’t good for my seo
many thanks
maggie
If there’s no index.html file, then just do a redirect and Google will know.
It’s not there – hence the 404 error. Ipstenu is right, just do a redirect and Google will know. A 301 redirect is permanent, so they will update accordingly.
Thanks for your help guys will do as you suggest
I’m guessing from what your saying the index.html is the home page? – but I’m still puzzled as to why I also have a version of the home page that comes up as “/” on google analytics – instead of the home page being represented by one phrase either index or /
any light you can shed would be most appreciated – many thanks, maggie
index.html is a default home page that many places assume exist.
/ and /index.php (or /index.html) all point to the same place. Your INDEX file 🙂 This is just how the web works, don’t overthink it too much.
You will always get people looking for /<named file> just as people insist on putting in www. before most URLs even though you don’t have to. WordPress will automagically move yourdomain.com/index.php to yourdomain.com
Put this in the top of your .htaccess:
Redirect 301 /index.html http://www.klearminds.co.uk
As for redirecting ALL 404s to the main page, that’s bad internet form, and a bad experience for your users. They won’t know what happened and may try the same URL a lot of times. A 404 tells them what’s wrong.
Thanks a mil, that’s really helpful 🙂
