Do you have hosting space and a domain name? Have you installed WordPress on your host?
Can you access your WordPress site on your host?
If you can, just login and start posting your content.
I went through the Dummy’s book for Blogging and it helped a lot but nothing prepares you for the actual going live. It is probably not that difficult but I am reluctant to start publishing a blog without having the ‘about me’ page ready and other parts. My concern is that I will publish and it will look poor and I won’t be able to pull it back.

Yes.
There are some maintenance mode plugins which hide your site from users unless they’re logged in. You can use it to keep your site private until you’re ready to go live, then deactivate the plugin. Check out the plugins repository.
