(complicated) question about moving a site

Hi, I hope I can explain this well.
I have a wp site attached to my domain (www.reelingsilk.com/academy). I want to move the academy wp site to the root level of the domain, and I know how to do that.

However, I would PREFER to do a new installation at the root level and then move the academy files to that. It seems that backing up is easier this way and I also have a better access to the database.

Although I have moved several site from the suffix position to the root directory, I cannot figure out how to actually do this little variation. Maybe I am missing something simple?
