  • It is probably a temporary bug. You can try the “other resources” for download the theme.

It may be a bug. I have now tried to download the themes from this page using three different browsers. Clearly I am missing something. When I request the “download” I would expect it to download on my desktop, like any other download. Why would it be reading my site at my server to give me such an error message?

    Any ideas?

Try to get your themes from somewhere else.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Get_New_Themes

When you get to the bad page, scroll down to the list of themes link and click that. You can get to the themes that way.

Macmanx and Beel, I have actually done what you have suggested, numerous times. I was hoping to use one of the “Featured” themes.

When I go to some of the “Other theme” resources, I see no instructions for downloading. In one section, it says there are thumbnails, but I see none. Many of those other themes seem to be for advanced users. Quite honestly, I just want a simple but pleasant theme, preferably one that I can adjust the colors on, but at this point I really do want to just have a theme.

I get the samething too…. jemel… rest assured it isn’t “Reading your site”….. the D/l links to downloads.wordpress.org….. which aparently does not have WP installed yet….

Scratching my head. TG, I really needed a good laugh after spending HOURS trying to get a new theme, figuring it was simply my newbiness preventing me from figuring it out. Now, tell me, how did you discern that the download is linking TO downloads.wordpress.org?

    Jemel

Wow, that’s a big problem. I’m sure it’ll be fixed soon. What theme exactly do you want? I’d be happy to find it from somewhere else and send it to you. I feel bad that you have had to spend so long on something that should be simple!

Thanks, Jalenack. I actually am trying to get two blogs up and running. Here are the two “featured themes” that I like: Green Marinee, Pool.

Jemel, the other theme resource list here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Get_New_Themes actually link to the theme’s individual pages. For example, “Codex WordPress Theme List” link to http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes/Theme_List

On that page, you have a wide choice of themes. Let’s say that you wanted the first theme listed there, “Basic”. Clicking the link takes you to the author’s page for “Basic”, which is located here: http://www.visual-assault.org/projects/wp_theme-basic/ On that page, you will see a very descriptive sentence which says, “Download it here”.

The other theme lists work in a similar fashion.

I know you’re frustrated, but please at least make an attempt before coming back and saying “I don’t get it.”

You can find Green Marinée here: http://e-lusion.com/work.htm

    And Pool here: http://www.lamateporunyogur.net/pool/

Both of those were listed (and linked to) in the Codex Theme list: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes/Theme_List

Thanks, Macmanx. Sorry to show any frustration. One thing you can be sure of, I do not post a question until I have searched the database and the forums and tried everything I can think of, usually repeatedly. Thanks so much for your help.

jemel — mouse over the link….. when you do that, most browsers will tell you the link in the status bar at the bottome some where.

macmanx — by the same token, don’t snap off at people (I’m not sayin you did) when they try something and it doesn’t work like it should. Simply put, the page he linked to does not work. Plain an simple. Searching or not, there wasn’t anything HE could do to fix it. Maybe the solution is to remove the /extend/themes section from the site. Obviously it doesn’t work.

Personaly I’d like to see a re-design (nothing drastic) of the main WP.org page to better pimp Codex as _the_ place to go to get themes and plugins and such. Even knowing what’s all in the codex, it’s not obvious what’s in there. All that’s mentioned is “all documentation, all the time.” WTF does that mean? To me, that’s user manual and code reference type stuff. It’s geek talk, and not everyone is a geek when it comes to this.

-but I’m just a gnome and we all gnow that a knome’s opinion doesn’t amount to a hill of beans-

[TOTALLY OT: Tg, you need to redo your tag to “doesn’t amount to a hill of gnu dung”…. it’s one more sterling example of the “gn” complex at work, y’know? (I’m not trying to be mean – I missed you and I’m glad you’re back! Even if I haven’t seen you yet….!)]

And yest, I like your idea re “pimping the Codex”. Sure, some of the Codex is equally geekstuff, but there’s a lot of “plain old language” in there too, and nowhere on the main site page does it get the credit or the referencing it deserves and needs….

[Even further OT: vkaryl: hehehe…. I’ll have to remember that… allthough, I’ll proly spell it gnudung…. then it becomes even more of a palendrome. Speaking of which how come plaendrome isn’t…. seems kind of odd. ;P)

I didn’t mean to imlpy that the codex is geeky… far from it. It’s perhapse some of the best laymen documentation I’ve everseen. What I think is a little to geeked out is the pages here at wp.org that reference the codex.

All this time, I’ve been trying to figure out how jemel ended up at the web page he did (with the “broken” (alegedly) themes) — it’s right on the front page. On the right…. where it claims “Great themes”……. themes is linked to the bad page…. it should be linked to the codex.
