• Hi

As a wordpress newbie I’ve created three blogs, all fairly similar – installed via host’s scripts, updated using wordpress, basic “twenty ten” theme, a few users, and some control.

Each set up and “newbie tested” and apparently working. Lovely piece of software!

And then, a few months later, I discover that some of the blogs don’t allow comments. Searching less than helpful – all this stuff seems to be three years old and unresolved. PHP problems? File permission problems? Hosting problems? Last night I was tearing my hair out!

Today, a bit more methodical – see which of the three blogs work “properly”. One is fine. One is mainly fine. One is mainly broken.

The “mainly broken” one has five posts. In reverse chronological order, by Kath, Sarah, Duncan, and two by Admin (me). None of these posts allow comments (the link is there but the comment entry form doesn’t appear on the next page!) EXCEPT for the first of my posts!

So after a bit more research, I discover that the dashboard page to edit or add new posts has A HIDDEN “discussion” box – and that’s the root of the problem.

As to why it’s hidden by default, or what I’ve done during installation or initial setup to apparently make “no comments” the default for some posts (users?) and not others – no idea!

OK, so I maybe need to RTFM, but for such a comprehensive and powerful piece of software, a little more thought on the setup defaults would have helped!

And if anyone can explain how I buggered some settings up, but not others, I’d be really grateful!

It’s just because that’s the default for WordPress 3.2. And – no – I’ve no idea why the decision was taken to hid the Discussion pane in 3.2 either. It has caused confusion for a lot of users.
