Looking for plugin to build database application in WordPress

I am looking for a plugin that on the front-end can display database tables and queries (sql select), and can handle updates to tables (sql update).
The plugin should be generic and be able to access an existing external database.

Been searching for a while, and have not found anything that can be used more or less out “of the box”.

I have on another platform (PmWiki) used such a system to build an application that is to be ported to WordPress, but I have not been able to find a plugin to do the job.
