Best method for adding videos and thumbnails?

Hi, the default wordpress oembed method for embedding videos is very nice – however it stops when it comes to thumbnails – if O want to have thumbnails in frontpage and archive pages and embedded video only in single post page, how can this be done? Thanks!

I tried several video plugins, but all of them seem to be br0ken at some point or not helpful with this “special” requirement or they do things slightly different than expected. I just want to add videos manually to posts, but only thumbs be visible in the not-single-post pages.
