I have not changed any html code in the php files of the Twenty ten themes I use. Therefore, can I just do an auto update to the version 3.2 without having to do backups at ? I presume nothing will be lost if I haven’t changed anything? Is this right?

I want to do backups later.

    Cheers,

Please would anyone be able to answer this?

Can I just update from wp version 3.1.1 to 3.2 automatically without back ups?

I have not altered any .php code or changed the Twenty Ten themes that I use, except for a custom header and added a few plugins.

I updated one site and it was not affected adversely by the update, i.e. didn’t lose any data or changes. Google sent me a message to say I needed to update that site to new version of wp as it may be vulnerable if I didn’t update it.
    Cheers 🙂

you can update, but you have to use twenty-eleven theme!

    With respect, that is incorrect!

Of course you can carry on using Twentyten. Your header will be preserved and as long as your plugins are 3.2 compatible so will they.

Before doing the update, check the PHP & MySQL versions on the server as the requirements for 3.2 have changed since 3.1 http://wordpress.org/about/requirements/

Even if you’re 100% certain that an upgrade will not cause any problems, it is always sensible to do a backup first.

@cubecolour Thanks. I understood I could use twenty ten theme and update to 3.2.
I have checked with my host and they have all the right versions required for PHP and MSQL, so that is all fine.

I am not too technical with this and just teaching myself as I go, so the backups will take me a while. I decided to do them later if I could just get away with updating first.

Have now updated 2 of the websites with no problems but sticking with Twenty ten at this stage.
    Cheers:)

Glad you’ve updated OK. Don’t put off the backups too long though – and remember a backup that can’t be restored isn’t worth tuppence, so you really need some way of testing the backup if you want peace of mind. I once used a plugin to make database backups which when tested were unable to be restored.

Using the file & database backup to create a local version of the site on XAMPP (or similar) is a good way to test the integrity of your backups.

@cubecolour. Thank you for the extra tips. I will note that.
