• For a while I’ve been running a WordPress.com blog called wordpress.centives.com – it was fairly successful and we decided to transition to our own domain using Dreamhost as our host.

    We registered the domainname centives.net and we used Dreamhost’s one click install. You can view the site over here: blog.centives.net – as you can see it’s powered by wordpress.org

    One problem though under the ‘plug-ins’ tab on the dashboard I don’t see ANY way to add new plugins. There are 8 pre-existing plug ins that I can activate but unlike what the help documentation suggests, I can’t see anyway to add new plug ins.

    I then thought I’d try the manual method by going to wp-content but when I look at the FTP I don’t find any such folder. Is this because I used the one click install from dreamhost? Is it possible to enable plug ins?

    Oh I got this error:
    You do not have sufficient permissions to install plugins on this site.

    But I’m logged in as the ONLY user on the site – the admin user :S?

    You will need to log in as admin to work with all features.

    I am logged in as admin.

    Then you should have all the links on left

    If you look at my blog post here: http://blog.centives.net/?p=8

    The first picture is proof that all the users associated with the account are admins. The second picture shows that there’s no way for me to add additional plug ins.

    Er anybody?

    You will need to go in database and check your user tables see if you have yourself as Id 1 if so click browse on wp_usermeta
    in around table 8 you should have this a:13:{s:13:”administrator”;s:1:”1″;s:11:”M_add_lev…
    if you are set as admin

    There are TWO types of one-click installs at DreamHost:
    * one click install,
    * one click CUSTOM install.
    The latter allows manual involvement. The former is very much fool-proof auto-pilot set up driven by the DreamHost.

    On that note I wanted to ask if anyone tried to move their blog between the two. Can you share your experience?

    You’ll need to choose a Custom Install to install your own plugins/themes at Dreamhost. The main downside of a custom install is that you’ll also need to monitor WordPress and your plugins for security updates and apply them yourself.

    The one-click install page for WordPress at Dreamhost reports:

    “What is the Difference between install types?
    Simple Install – We install the program, perform all updates. You will not have access to the application files but we have included some themes and plugins. Customization is very limited
    Custom Install – You select where to install the app, specify database name, user account, etc. You will have full access to the application files and database”
