Subdirectory & Subdomain on one site

    From what I understand, subdomains are frowned upon by search engines for the most part and subdirectories are preferred. In addition, working with subdomains can also bring about challenges you don’t have with simple subdirectories.

    The problem — I need to have a subdomain for a blog. It just makes sense to have it is this.mysite.com – but the WP install is in the root and uses subdirectories.

    What is the best way to accomplish the above? Do I need to install a second instance of WP in the subdirectory? If so, is there any way to use the single WP database install so all the users can be synchronized and shared?

    Yes – unless you use WordPress Multisite.

    Not across 2 separate installs, no.

    Thank you – isn’t WP3 = WPMU and hence it is multisite? From there it seems as if the answer is a no — you can’t use subdomains and subdirectories. This is because the network install allows you to use one or the other but not both.

    So essentially, in order to do what I want to do, if I already have a WP install in the root that uses subdirectories, there is no way to (a) synchronize the database of users by installing another WP instance in the subdomain, or (b) create a new blog in a subdirectory? Correct?

    Not quite. You now have the option to run single or multisite installs but you need to make some changes to use multisite.

    This is because the network install allows you to use one or the other but not both.

    As I understand it, that’s correct. The only option I can see if you want to use both is to choose one and then set up a server redirect for the other.
