Picture positioning on pages

Guys im very new to this. Im adding content and images to pages of my site (which isnt live yet) and im getting frustrated trying to position pictures along side simple text links. For example, i have a page with some text links to PDF’s and the rest of the area is bare so im trying to add some pics to break up the white void on the page.

I have several pre set thumbnail sizes to use and different alignments but sometimes the pictures end up all over the place when i actually update and look at the page.

Is there a way of creating a field within the edit field to allow pictures to stay where i want them? I have been using the different alignment settings, im hoping theres an easier way….
