• I want to build a site with:
static pages, eg. contact, documents etc.
    blog — wordpress
frontpage, which is a search engine using PHP and Sphinx which I’ll code.

What’s the best way to accomplish this?

Can I some how make the frontpage a page and have a link to blog?
What about doing search results would I have to make a plugin?

Yes to all of those questions. All able to do via a WordPress install. WordPress comes with it’s own search facility in-built, you can make any page the homepage and you can have a blog section, documents, contact page and a whole lot more.

Thanks, the search engine is actually a separate part of the site searching it’s own dataset not blog posts.

Is that still possible, I assume I need to write a plugin?
