Can't update or upload on Mac Server

We had a web designer set up a Word Press site for us which is running on an Apple server running Osx Server 10.6. WE don’t use the built in FTP service that is part of the OSX server we use Rumpus for the FTP server. I set up a WPuser ftp account.

First two issues:
1) I can not upload images to the media library ” it says it can not move the file ” The file is already in the WP-Content folder.

2) I can not update Word Press it self. It says it can not locate the Wordprerss root directory.

I’ve looked for basic set up info. Can anyone shed some light here or point me in the right direction.
