Missing menu items after upgrade to 3.1.2…
-
Just upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2 and some menu items are missing. Up til now I can only pin-point items in the Plugins menu going missing (Add New, Editor & possibly 1 or 2 others, I can’t be too certain as I didn’t use them all on a regular basis but it looks a fair bit shorter). I tried deactivating the Admin Bar as it seemed to have helped others, but not this time unfortunately.
There’s also no Add New button on the plugins page, at least none that I’ve been able to find yet… Anyone know what’s causing this in 3.1.2?
Thanks in advance,
LJ

Well it took a lot longer than I’d like but I finally noticed the “Install Plugins” option has been moved to the drop-down menu at the top of the page, but only when actually on the Plugins page (doesn’t seem like the best place for it, but maybe that’s just me :-/ ). However, it doesn’t seem to work, giving the error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_get_current_user() in /…/wp-includes/capabilities.php on line 1028
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks in advance,
LJ
P.S.
Should the “Install Plugins” option still be appearing under the Plugins menu even though it’s been added to the drop-down box? Seems rather counter-productive having to always go to the Plugins page if you decide to add a plugin (as opposed to accessing it from any page).P.P.S.
The Editor button (for plugins) still hasn’t been found on our back-end – has it been removed from 3.1.2? Same goes for the Upgrade function, I know for a fact that some of the plugins I’m using have upgrades available since upgrading the sites core files, but nothing is showing on the plugins page, and the “Upgrade Available” tab also seems to have been completely removed… :-/It also appears that the “Plugins” widget has been removed from the Dashboard page, which just adds to the annoyance of upgrading. Starting to seriously regret it now so can someone please try to help me resolve this (unless of course all these things were purposely removed, in which case – those who maintain the software – please put them back in!!)… :-/
Would someone please get back to me on this issue – stands to reason that if vital features are missing (for whatever reason) it’s a major issue… :-/
Rename your plugins folder to stop all plugin action. Do the same with your theme. That will force wp to open with the default theme and no plugins. All all back one by one until your site breaks.
kmessinger – thanks for replying, however I’m confused at your post. Why would I want my site to break? At the moment the front-end of the site is running fine (that is there are no bugs that aren’t related to specific plugins and no broken pages). Additionally, the issues I’ve posted above all occur in the admin area (and as of yet only affect plugin management features). The only plugin that changes the back-end is the Fluency admin theme and I’ve already de-activated and found that it didn’t make any difference to these issues. I appreciate the response but I can’t see how your suggestion would help… :-/
Any other ideas?
If your site isn’t working on the BACK end, the first test you always run is turning off plugins.
You want your site to break so you can find out what’s causing it to break. This is basic debugging.
Also, are you using MultiSite? It’s unclear in this post, and often DOES matter π
When you upgraded, did you do the automatic upgrade or a manual one?
If you upgraded manually, did you also remember to replace the files in the *root* of the installation?
A great many number of people only upgrade the wp-admin and wp-includes folders, and fail to remember that there’s all these other important files in the root as well. This often leads to weird problems.
If you’re running multisite, which your other thread you piggybacked on seemed to indicate, then the plugins install screen and menu item is now in network admin. So is the new plugins widget.
Ipstenu – I was hoping to avoid that route and keep it as a last resort as I rely on a lot of plugins to achieve the functionality needed for the site I’m working on, and therefore is a very time consuming process. However, it proved to be much quicker one than expected as – after deactivating all active plugins then re-activating them in alphabetical order, starting with the A’s – it turns out the issue seems to be initiated by the All in One Video Pack (and the All in One Video Pack Sidebar Widget too). In all honestly these plugins are no big loss to us just now as we’ve yet to figure out how we can implement them properly for our members, but of course a resolution would be helpful for future reference.
Just to clarify, all previously active plugins have been re-activated with the exception of All in One Video Pack & All in One Video Pack Sidebar Widget, and I’m now able to access both the Install Plugins & Update Network pages (just ran the update and it was successful). However, there’s still no way to update plugins from the admin area nor does there appear to be a way of updating the wordpress core files from the admin area (fyi, earlier tonight I applied the 3.1.3 update in the hope that these features had been re-added, but nope :-/ ).
Otto – I applied the 3.1.2 update via the automatic update function in the admin area (upgrading from 3.0.1) but as there was no such function in 3.1.2, at least none that I could find, I applied the 3.1.3 update manually. And yes, all core files were replaced by the new ones (I copied the entire contents of the wordpress folder inside the archive to my sites root).
To sum up, the Fatal Error issues seem to be resolved for the time being, I guess it’s just a case of waiting for an update that includes the missing plugin management features present in earlier versions… :-/
Andrea_r – the site was initially set-up to run as a multisite/network, and after having a look (now that I’m able to access it π ) they are there. Are the plugin/core files update features there too (I intend to hunt for them but a point in the right direction would be appreciated)? Just a quick note, this new layout is extremely confusing, the previous one was much more user-friendly… π
Finally found the “missing” features. I still insist that this new layout is over-complicated, hopefully get used to it over time though (until it gets changed again that is ;-p )…
