I’m looking to have all of my posts appear under the /news/ subdirectory, as wordpress.org does.

Under Permalink Settings, if I choose a custom structure of /news/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/ for the page permalinks, this works fine, and I get nice addresses like /news/2010/04/test-article

However, as soon as I enter news as my Category base, the links for the individual articles fail to work and result in 404 errors. Is there any reason why these two won’t work at the same time?

Also, how have WordPress.org set up a list of most recent posts, category links, etc at http://www.wordpress.org/news/? Has a page been created for this, using a dedicated page template, or is there a way for WordPress to automatically generate an archive of all posts at this address?

Any help anyone could provide would be great. Thanks.

  • A solution that might work for you:

    1) Create a page named ‘News’ using (probably) the ‘default’ template.
    2) Go to Settings->Reading, click the ‘static’ radio button, and set your blog page to the news page you just created. I think you will probably also have to set the static front page, which may be a problem with this solution. Our designer pretty much always wants a front page that isn’t the blog page so it works out for me.
