Mix WordPress with a Static Website

I’d like to set up a WordPress website that shares URLs with a static website, and use “pretty permalinks” — so that a webpage at /my_webpage/ will be generated via WordPress and also be able to use resources within a real server folder /my_webpage/graphics/ … Any helpful resources on how to accomplish this? Tips and tricks using Apache mod_rewrite?
